English
Subject Leader: Mrs J Cox
At Hermitage Primary School our long term vision for English is for all children to:
- read easily, fluently and with good understanding; we aim to develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information.
- acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and a knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
- appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage.
- write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in, and for a range of contects, purposes and audiences.
- use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas.
- become competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

At Hermitage Primary School we use quality texts to plan carefully sequenced English units of work. We want our children to love reading and we encourage them to enjoy a variety of reading materials including fiction, poetry and non-fiction. In Key Stage One we teach Phonics daily and we use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised Programme. Children write for a variety of purposes and audiences and in a range of contexts. Work for English and for cross curricular writing is displayed with pride throughout the school; each classroom displays a variety of labels, captions, visual aids, interactive questions and prompts to help with literacy teaching and learning.
