Design & Technology
Subject Leader; Mrs Berry
At Hermitage Primary school our long term vision for design and technology is for all children to:
- enjoy and appreciate the value of designing and making purposeful products – their own and existing ones
- become creative, critical problem solvers, who are willing to take risks, be reflective and try again - developing their resilience
- use their knowledge from a broad range of subjects in a meaningful way.
The National Curriculum for Design and Technology aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop the creativity, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technical world
- build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
- critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
- understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

At Hermitage we have developed a bespoke Scheme of Work which is used across the whole school. This scheme ensures that, throughout their time at Hermitage, children participate in a range of D&T projects -which incorporate structures, electrical sytems, textiles, mechanisms and nutrition - whilst learning and developing new skills. See below for our Curriculum Map for D&T.

‘It’s tricky and fiddly.’ – Year 4 pupil
‘I like how you plan it first, then we are taught techniques, then we try them out before making it.’ – Year 5 pupil
‘I like the building - using skills and figuring it out as you go along - as sometimes it doesn’t work.’ – Year 6 pupil
