Welcome to Class R1

The Reception class is the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). We follow the new revised EYFS curriculum working towards the Early Learning Goals. There are 7 areas of learning: Communication and Langague, Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design.

Spring

SPRING 1

Our new topic will be SUPERHEROES. We will use the book SUPERTATO as the basis for activities such as making a story map, sorting fruit and vegetables and weighing vegetables. We will also work on CVC sentences linked to Phase 3 tricky words and the text SUPERMUM/SUPERDAD. We will be finding out about forces and magnets and investigating materials and floating and sinking. We will be designing and making our own superhero masks and capes.

SPRING 2

Our second topic for this term is CASTLES, MAGIC and DRAGONS. We will use a range of story books including some well known fairy tales to encouage children to sequnce stories by talking about the beginning, middle and end and enable them to retell them using some of the langague of stories. We will also act out stories and develop story telling in the role-play area, in the reading area and on the outside stage. We will be creating magic wands and crowns aswell as making magic potions and mixtures.

  • Recognition of all initial sounds  - PHASE 2 start with s a t p i n -c d m g o k - h e u r b l f  PHASE 3 = j w x y v  z zz qu sh ch th ng ai ee igh oa oo ar ow ur oi or er air ear 
  • Talk about digraphs eg sh th ng (2 letters making one sound) and vowel digraphs (ai ee igh oa oo)
  • Segment and blend orally and then using magnetic letters to make CVC words e.g. p-a-t = pat, t-i-n = tin, j-e-t = jet, sh-o-p = shop
  • Recognise by matching and reading tricky words = I, to, the, and, no, go, into he she we be me was my you are 
  • Recognition of number  1-5/10/20
  • Counting objects 1-5/10 - begin to problem solve by finding out how many more you need to make it to 10
  • Mark making -- holding pencil effectively - vertical lines/anti-clockwise circles
  • Correct formation of letters s a t p i n c d m g k o e u r h b f l j w x z y v
  • Control the size of writing = tall and short letters
  • Independence skills in collecting their belongings and toiletting
  • Independence in putting on their own coats
  • Listening games - following instructions 2-3 parts
  • Listening to others and responding to a question
  • Confidence to share own ideas 

Summer

Welcome back! We hope you had a great Easter and enjoyed the sunshine.

SUMMER 1

Our new topic is GARDENS. We will start with the story of Jasper's Beanstalk and find out about growing seeds - including an investigation into what seeds need to grow. We will also learn about life cycles of butterflies and frogs. We will use a range of story and information books and focus on writing linked sentences to retell a story or to give information. Our artwork will be based on flowers and mini-beasts and we will compose music to represent the life-cycle of a butterfly.

Phase 3 phonics - All phonemes for letters (graphemes) of the alphabet, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo (short and long sound), ar, ur, oi, or, ow, ear, air, er. Tricky words - to read and spell= he, she, me, my, by, be, we, all, they, are, her, you, sure, pure

Phase 4 phonics - NO new phonemes = consolidation of all of PHASE 3 phonemes including dographs and trigraphs. CCVC, CVCC, CCVCC words (C= consonant/V= vowel)
